C-E Solutions successfully deploys and operates Mobile Rocket Impact Scoring System

Building upon the success of last year's installation of a bomb impact scoring system for an Air Weapons Range in Northern Queensland, impressed with the product, Defence engaged C-E Solutions to provide a mobile variant that delivers even better performance than the fixed system. C-E Solutions has initially deployed this system to Woomera to test the rocket firing accuracy of Defence’s new Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter Tiger.

ARH Tiger

The last team of C-E Solutions technical staff recently returned from Woomera, South Australia, after a successful trials campaign was performed to test the accuracy of unguided rockets fired from the ARH Tiger. C-E Solutions cycled two teams through the Woomera Test Facility with staff from the teams being responsible for deploying the complete system, setting it up, commissioning it with the Commonwealth of Australia, and then operating it against the challenging task of capturing and locating the impact points of rockets fired in various configurations, including large number salvos.

The complete activity proved to be challenging, but again, the team at C-E Solutions have proven their worth.

The first challenge faced was the highly aggressive schedule which required C-E Solutions to be in place and operating the system within 6 weeks of receiving the order. This particular systems engineering challenge was highly dependent upon the timely provision of specialist sub-system components from a range of domestic and overseas suppliers. When some suppliers failed to supply essential and pivotal components in time, C-E Solutions was required to formulate contingency plans and implement alternative design solutions – an involved and costly task with such a complex system. C-E Solutions bore the cost of these contingency actions in order to ensure delivery of the service.

The second challenge was the technical risk involved, including incorporating requirements unique to Woomera, as well as improving legacy software in order to increase the accuracy of the system. The mobile system is a world first and will allow C-E Solutions to be re-engaged multiple times by the ADF and other international armed forces to test accuracy of weapon deployments at various test ranges worldwide. The system remains a C-E Solutions asset and will be leased by customers upon requirement. Whilst it is originally designed for measuring the accuracy of released ordnance, the system has incidental applications such as deployment for emergency wide area communications and crowd surveillance at large public events.
